Here's the point that no one explains and that causes 80% of disappointments. A plush toy is measured in three different ways depending on the manufacturer, and the difference between two methods can be up to 30%.
Standing measurement
From the bottom of the feet to the top of the head, plush placed vertically. This is the most honest measurement, and the one we use.
Diagonal measurement
From the tip of one leg to the tip of the opposite arm, arms and legs spread as wide as possible. On a character like Patrick, who is star-shaped, this method easily adds 8 to 10 cm compared to the standing measurement. It is technically accurate and commercially convenient.
Flat measurement
Plush placed on a table, slightly flattened. It gains 2 to 3 cm because the stuffing spreads out.
The reflex to have
Take a tape measure and visualize the announced height against a wall or on your desk. Thirty seconds of checking will save you disappointment. And if the product sheet gives a weight, it's even more reliable than a height: weight is non-negotiable.

Materials, filling, and density
Two 30 cm plush toys can weigh 180 g or 300 g. The difference lies entirely in the filling, and this is what distinguishes a plush that keeps its shape for ten years from one that sags in six months.
Outer fabric
Short pile (velvet) on most SpongeBob models: it better renders solid, clean colors and geometric contours. Long pile, fluffier, is suitable for rounded characters like Patrick or Gary.
Filling
Siliconized polyester fiber in almost all modern plush toys. Siliconized means that each fiber is coated, which prevents it from clumping after washing. A non-siliconized plush becomes lumpy after the first machine wash.
Density
It is simply calculated: weight divided by height. Around 8 to 10 g/cm, you have a firm plush that stands upright. Below 6 g/cm, it is soft and folds in on itself. Neither is a defect: firm is suitable for decor, soft for cuddling.
Seams
Look at the neck seam and the crotch seam: these are the two areas that give out first when a child drags their plush. Double stitching at these points multiplies the lifespan.

Washing, drying and reshaping
Machine or hand wash?
Machine wash at 30 °C, in a mesh bag or closed pillowcase, delicate cycle, spin at 400 rpm maximum. The mesh bag prevents seams from rubbing against the drum and prevents any attached eyes from snagging.
Drying, the critical step
Never tumble dry: heat slightly melts the polyester fiber and the plush comes out compact and rough. Squeeze the plush in a towel to extract water, then let it dry flat for 24 to 48 hours, away from a radiator.
Restoring fluffiness
Once dry, knead the plush with your hands for one minute to loosen matted fibers, then brush the fur in the direction of the fabric with a soft clothing brush. It will regain 90% of its initial volume.
Between washes

⚠️ Mistake to avoid
Never use fabric softener on a plush toy. It leaves a film on the fibers that sticks them together: the plush loses its fluffiness after the first wash and becomes slightly sticky to the touch. Water and a mild detergent are sufficient, and the fluffiness can be restored by hand.
